Submitted by dawnteo on August 19, 2009 - 12:58pm
Sherri Connell was elected as a member of the Tempe Elementary School District Governing Board in November 2008 General Election to serve a four-year term officially sworn in January 1, 2009. Just this past June, she attended the Arizona School Boards Association annual legislative assembly on behalf of the Tempe Elementary Governing Board as their designated delegate.
Sherri has a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in English from Northern Arizona University. She started work as an Editorial Assistant with the Phoenix New Times, promoted to Calendar Listings Editor and wrote a handful of feature articles published in the Night & Day section; however, her career was cut short due to a company layoff in 1999. Shortly after, she obtained work as a Program Service Evaluator III with the Arizona Department of Economic Security Family Assistance Administration tasked to determine eligibility for state and federal assistance working mostly from Vista del Camino and spending one day a week at a domestic violence shelter. After two years, she was contracted to revive a workforce development program on behalf of Concerned Citizens for Community Health through the City of Scottsdale where she attained an increase in grant funding from Valley of the Sun United Way and secured city funding for an additional case manager still in place today. After three years, she transitioned into a position with Maricopa County as a workforce investment board liaison where she was able to streamline communication between management from Human Services Department and volunteer business board members.
Presently, Sherri works as a Management Analyst for the Workforce Development Division. She has been a member of the National Association of Housing Redevelopment Officials, East Valley Alliance, National Association of Workforce Boards and is currently an associate of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council Economic Development Directors’ Team. She is an Emerge Alumni from the Class of 2008 and the Social Committee Chair of Legislative District 17.
Most recently, Sherri was appointed Treasurer of AZ Schoolworks, an organization dedicated to helping school board candidates get elected. Sherri Connell is married with two boys ages nine and four, one fish, two cats and one dog. She ran the 2007 PF Chang’s Marathon and continues to run every day.
